How to clean your wireless mouse

If your wireless mouse seems sluggish or unresponsive, it may be due to grimy buildup on the bottom. To get it working like new, we’ll show you how to clean your Apple® Magic Mouse®—or any brand of wireless mouse—without harming it.

Here at Asurion, we help people learn more about their technology every day. From connecting two pairs of AirPods® to your devices to decluttering and deep cleaning your phone, we’ll show you how to get more out of the devices you rely on most. Here’s how to clean a Magic Mouse or other wireless mouse.

How to clean your wireless mouse

  1. Disconnect your mouse from Bluetooth® in your computer’s settings, then turn your wireless mouse off.
  2. Use a damp cotton pad or cotton swab to clean the sensor, which is on the bottom toward the front.
  3. Dab a small amount of dish soap and water on a cloth to clean the tracks and center on the bottom of your mouse, but avoid getting liquid near the charging port at the back.
  4. Be sure to clean the area your mouse sits on with your cloth, too—dust the area frequently to avoid buildup.

Still sluggish? Check your settings

If your wireless mouse is clean but still seems to move slowly, you may need to adjust your settings, in particular your tracking speed. Increasing the tracking speed will make the cursor move faster across the screen with less physical mouse movement.

Here’s how to adjust your mouse settings:

On a Mac®

  • Open System Preferences, then select Mouse.

On a PC running Windows™

  • Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Mouse.
